English meat in France

Phil and Jackie Rhodes became expats after a long period living in Cornwall and deciding that they wanted to escape the treadmill of daily life. Initially thinking they would retire, they moved to the Dordogne but were gradually pulled back into the workplace.
Most people who move abroad think that they will run a little B&B or perhaps get into something that involves tourism but not Phil and Jackie. They had previously run a sausage making business in Cornwall alongside their other jobs and they started doing the same for British expats in France. This was the start of www.sausageland.com That developed into producing bacon, joints with cracking and a variety of other products which used the locally produced free range pork that was available.
They have recently opened a shop because they did not have enough space at home and with local deliveries, internet orders and the word spreading fast they have now got an expanding business serving not only the British expat community but also many French customers.
Phil told us that the French are at first wary of the idea of crackling on pork and hand-made sausages in the English manner but once convinced to try, can't get enough!
This is clearly an object lesson to us all that it is possible to open a business abroad and make a success of it. But what of the bureaucracy we all hear about in France? And, of course, the language problems too. Phil said that he had been able to do a week's training course in English at the 'Chambre de Metier'which set him up with everything he needed to know including the forms to fill in for tax and so on. We found this heartening news and Phil followed this by saying even though his French is not great, the whole thing is possible with a little support from a translator.
